Tyke Hike: Exploring Nature (4 Sessions)

Help prepare + collect materials.  Assistance with dissection and crafts as needed. Some cutting is required -- it would be helpful for adults to cut some of the supplies before the session.

Campers will:

• Enhance curiosity of the outside world
• Learn fun facts about nature
• Dissect flowers and seeds
• Learn how to experiment

• How can I explore the world around me?

• What can I observe and learn about nature?

• Why is it important to spend time outdoors?

• Session 1: Observations in nature and making your own Nature Explorer Journal

  • 6-10 green leaves of different shapes and sizes, 2 cardboard pieces for book covers (cereal box, etc.), scissors, items to decorate the cover of your journal (paper, fabric, magazine cuttings, etc.), glue, Mod Podge sealer/varnish (optional), printer paper for pages, paper hole punch (optional), string or ribbon, colored pencils or crayons

• Session 2: Dissection and making fruit and vegetable prints

  • tray or plate for dissection, two fruits sliced in half (apple, orange - keep the core and seeds!), carrot or celery (cut into various shapes), knife (for adults only!), tempura or washable paint, paper or plastic plates for paint, newspaper or washable surface (for using paint), colored pencils or crayons

• Session 3: Fun with flowers and nature crowns 

  • 2-3 flowers of different shapes and sizes, construction paper (will send photo in advance showing how to make it into the shape of a crown), scissors, items to decorate your crown (stickers, flowers, leaves, magazine cuttings, etc.), tape, colored pencils or crayons

• Session 4: Seeds, trees and acorn cookies 

  • tray or plate for dissection, 2 lima beans (soaked in water overnight), playdough (will share Tyke Hike recipe to make to make your own in advance), 6-10 acorns (or dry lima beans), flat surface to form cookies, rolling pin (optional), cookie cutters (optional), colored pencils or crayons
